Email software for Shopify stores, matched to catalog and order volume.

For most Shopify stores with a real catalog, Klaviyo is the best starting pick. Its Shopify connector is built around orders, checkouts and products, and its email plan starts at $20 a month for 500 profiles. Stores that want to start with no monthly fee should look first at Shopify Email, which is free for the first 10,000 emails each month. The right choice depends on your profile count, whether you need SMS in the same segments, and how many automated flows you will build in the first quarter.

Prices from each vendor's public pricing page, checked 7 October 2026. Written by a pen-name editor for the site's editorial team · about 15 minute read.

Short answer by store type

  1. Growing catalog with cart and post-purchase flows: Klaviyo, from $20 a month at 500 profiles.
  2. Independent brand that wants workflow depth without enterprise pricing: Drip, from $39 a month for up to 2,500 people.
  3. Budget-first store that also needs SMS and transactional email: Brevo, with a free plan and Starter from $9 a month.
  4. Brand-new store with no monthly spend yet: Shopify Email, free for the first 10,000 emails each month.
  5. Brand with a data team and a large profile base: Customer.io, from $100 a month on the Essentials plan.

What a Shopify store needs from email software

A general email tool treats every list as a list of addresses. A Shopify store needs a tool that understands the store: which products a shopper viewed, which checkout they left, which order came next and which collection they buy from most often. Without that layer, abandoned-cart emails cannot show the right item, post-purchase messages cannot be timed to delivery, and segments built on spend or product category have to be maintained by hand.

The second need is volume planning. Most email platforms price on contacts, profiles or monthly sends, and a Shopify store's list tends to grow with its traffic rather than in a straight line. A plan that is cheap at 500 contacts can cost several times more at 10,000, and the gap is larger when SMS is added. Because of that, the comparison below shows prices at several list sizes instead of a single starting figure.

The third need is a short list of flows that work before anything else is built. A store can run for months on a welcome series, an abandoned-checkout sequence, a browse-abandonment flow, a post-purchase message and a winback sequence. Choose a platform that makes those five easy to build and easy to measure, then decide whether you need anything more advanced.

How this guide was built

The desk read each vendor's public pricing page and, where it was available, its help documentation, on 7 October 2026. Every price in this guide comes from those pages. If a vendor does not publish a price for a given list size, the table says pricing on request rather than estimating. Prices are in US dollars, billed monthly unless the table says annual, and exclude taxes and add-ons unless stated.

Vendors were compared on five points that come directly from their pricing and feature descriptions: whether the platform connects to Shopify, whether it includes prebuilt store flows, what it costs at realistic list sizes, whether a free plan or trial exists, and whether SMS is available in the same account. This guide does not make claims about performance, deliverability or conversion results, because none of those are published by the vendors in a form that can be checked here.

Each tool for Shopify stores

Klaviyo

Email plan from $20/month at 500 profiles · Free plan to 250 profiles · Pricing page

Klaviyo is the default for Shopify stores that want the store's own data to drive email. Its Shopify connector brings in orders, checkouts, products and customer events, and it comes with prebuilt flows for abandoned checkout, browse abandonment, welcome, post-purchase and winback. A store can launch those flows quickly and then edit the copy and product blocks to match its own catalog.

The weak point is cost at scale. The email plan is $100 a month at 5,000 profiles, $150 at 10,000 and $400 at 25,000. SMS is a separate plan, so a store that adds text messages should price both sides before committing. Its subscription-billing logic is also thinner than what dedicated subscription tools offer, which matters for stores selling replenishment products.

Choose Klaviyo if you want the fastest route to working cart and post-purchase flows and you expect to build more than five automations in the first year.

Drip

From $39/month for 1 to 2,500 people · 14-day trial, no credit card · Pricing page

Drip suits independent Shopify brands that want serious workflow depth but do not want to pay for an enterprise platform. Its pricing is built on people and email volume, and the table lists unlimited email sends at most bands, with up to 50 workflows and dynamic segments on the lower tiers. Revenue dashboards help a founder see which flow is producing sales.

Drip has no ongoing free plan, so a store must move to a paid band from the start. Predictive features are lighter than Klaviyo's, and SMS is not the core of the product. A store that runs most of its marketing through email, and wants clear workflows it can edit without a specialist, is the best fit.

At 5,000 people the listed price is $89 a month, and at 25,000 it is $369 a month. Those figures are from the pricing page for those bands; check the band that applies to your exact count before you sign up.

Brevo

Free plan: 300 sends a day, up to 100,000 contacts · Starter from $9/month · Pricing page

Brevo combines email, SMS and transactional sending in one account, and its free plan allows up to 100,000 contacts with a daily send limit of 300. That makes it useful for a store that wants to keep order confirmations, shipping texts and marketing campaigns under one login and one bill.

Pricing is set by monthly email volume rather than by contacts, so a store with a large list that sends rarely may pay less than one with a small list that sends often. Automation and A/B testing arrive on the Standard plan at $18 a month. Brevo offers less store-specific data mapping than Klaviyo, so product blocks and order details need more manual setup.

Brevo is the strongest pick for a store where margin is tight and SMS is a real part of the plan.

Shopify Email

First 10,000 emails each month free, then $1 per 1,000 · Pricing page

Shopify Email is the lowest-cost way to send store email. The first 10,000 emails each month are free, and beyond that the price is $1 per 1,000 emails. For a new store with a small list, the monthly bill is often zero, which makes it the sensible starting point while the catalog and audience are still small.

Its limitation is depth. Stores that want branching automations, predictive segments, or detailed reporting on each flow will hit those limits sooner than they expect. Because pricing rises with sending volume, a store that sends frequent promotions to a large list should compare the per-email cost against a flat plan from another vendor.

Use Shopify Email for campaigns and a few core messages. Move to a dedicated platform when flows start to carry real revenue.

Mailchimp

Free to 250 contacts and 500 sends a month · Standard $20/month at 500 contacts · Pricing page

Mailchimp is the familiar choice. Its free plan covers 250 contacts and 500 sends a month, and the pricing page also lists a 14-day trial of the Standard plan. A new store can connect its Shopify account, send a first campaign and learn the basics before spending anything.

Costs rise by contact band. The Standard plan starts at $20 a month at 500 contacts, $100 for the 2,501 to 5,000 band and $135 for the 5,001 to 10,000 band. Automation depth is shallower than Klaviyo's, so a store that grows into serious cart and post-purchase programs usually moves on.

Mailchimp is a sensible first tool for a debut store. Plan the next move early, while the list is still small.

MailerLite

Free to 250 subscribers and 2,500 emails a month · Comfort $12/month at 500 subscribers · Pricing page

MailerLite is a low-cost option for small catalogs. Its free plan allows 250 subscribers and 2,500 emails a month. The Comfort plan starts at $12 a month for 500 subscribers, or $10.80 a month billed annually, and includes a monthly email allowance tied to the subscriber tier.

The pricing page does not publish figures above the 500-subscriber starting tier in the data used for this guide, so a store that expects to grow past that should use the calculator on the vendor's site before choosing. Store-specific data mapping is lighter than Klaviyo's, which suits a catalog with a small number of products.

MailerLite fits a small shop that wants popups, welcome flows and campaigns for very little money.

Moosend

Pro from $9/month at 500 contacts ($7 billed annually) · 30-day free trial · Pricing page

Moosend is a budget platform with cart triggers, product recommendations and unlimited emails on its contact-based Pro plan. For a store on a tight budget, the 500-contact entry price is among the lowest in this guide, and annual billing lowers the monthly figure further.

Its Shopify-specific polish trails the larger platforms. Email credit packs are sold separately for stores that need a fixed volume, and there is no ongoing free plan after the 30-day trial. Check whether the product recommendations and cart triggers cover the flows you want before choosing it over a larger tool.

Moosend is a good pick for a store that wants automated cart recovery at a low, predictable price.

ActiveCampaign

Starter from $15/month at 1,000 contacts · Free trial available · Pricing page

ActiveCampaign suits stores that sell both to consumers and to businesses, or that run a sales process alongside the shop. Its Starter plan includes email marketing, marketing automation, standard CRM and ecommerce integrations. Plus adds standard segmentation and landing pages, and Pro adds advanced segmentation.

The cost of the advanced features is the main issue. Pro is listed at $79 a month at 1,000 contacts, and Enterprise at $145. A pure consumer store with a simple catalog rarely needs that depth, and the extra complexity can slow down the first flows.

ActiveCampaign is a strong choice when the Shopify store feeds a wholesale or B2B pipeline that needs its own deal stages.

Customer.io

Essentials from $100/month · 10,000 profiles $145/month · Pricing page

Customer.io is built around events: a store sends a message when a specific customer action happens, and it can combine email, push and SMS in one journey. Brands with a data team can connect their own event streams and build journeys that depend on several signals at once.

It is the wrong choice for a store without technical staff. Setup takes longer than the lighter tools, and the price scales with profile count, with the Essentials plan listed at $100 a month and profile-based bands running from $145 at 10,000 profiles to $505 at 50,000 or more. Eligible early-stage companies can receive 12 months free through the Startup Program, which the pricing page describes.

Use Customer.io when the store's own data is already clean and the team can own the event tracking.

Kit

Free up to 10,000 subscribers · Creator $33/month billed annually · Pricing page

Kit suits creator-led brands that sell merchandise, digital products or subscriptions alongside a newsletter. The free plan covers up to 10,000 subscribers, with unlimited landing pages, forms and email broadcasts, plus tagging and segmentation.

Visual automations and sequences start on the Creator plan at $33 a month billed annually, so a store that needs cart or post-purchase flows will pay for that tier. Kit is not built around a product catalog, and a store with a large range of SKUs should look elsewhere.

Kit is a fit for a brand whose audience follows a person more than a product line.

GetResponse

Starter $19/month ($15.58 billed annually) · Free trial · Pricing page

GetResponse is a good fit for stores that run launches, drops or live events. Its tools include landing pages, funnels and webinars, which let a store build a launch sequence without a separate page builder.

Starter includes one automation workflow, so most stores will need the Marketer plan at $59 a month to get abandoned-cart recovery and advanced segmentation. There is no ongoing free plan. For a catalog store that mostly sends standard promotions, the extra tools add cost without much benefit.

Pick GetResponse for event-driven launches and drops, not for everyday catalog email.

How to choose the right platform

Start with the list you will have in twelve months, not today. Multiply your current profile count by the growth you expect, then read the price for that band on each shortlisted pricing page. A plan that looks cheap at 500 contacts can be the most expensive option at 10,000, and the reverse is also true for some tools.

Next, count the flows you need in the first quarter. If the answer is five or fewer and they are standard, a lighter tool may do the job. If the answer is more than five and includes predictive or behavior-based segments, the extra cost of Klaviyo or Customer.io is usually justified.

Finally, decide whether SMS belongs in the same platform. Keeping email and SMS together makes consent, quiet hours and segments easier to manage. Splitting them across two vendors invites mistakes, so a store that plans to send texts should compare the Email+SMS price of each finalist rather than the email price alone.

Setup and migration checklist

StepWhat to checkDone when
1. Export and map customersExport the current list with consent status, tags and purchase historyEvery active subscriber has a consent source and a tag
2. Connect the storeConfirm orders, checkouts and products sync in near real timeA test order appears on the customer profile
3. Rebuild the core flowsWelcome, abandoned checkout, browse abandonment, post-purchase, winbackEach flow fires from a test event and renders product blocks correctly
4. Check consent and unsubscribeUnsubscribe links, suppression lists and consent flags carry overNo previously unsubscribed address is re-added to a campaign
5. Set SMS rulesQuiet hours, opt-in records and which flows may send textSMS flows only reach subscribers with recorded consent
6. Authenticate the sending domainSPF, DKIM and DMARC records for the store's domainThe platform reports the domain as verified
7. Run in parallelKeep the old tool live for one full promotional cycleRevenue per flow in the new tool matches expectations before the old one is switched off

Migrations fail most often at steps 1 and 7. A list exported without consent records cannot be safely imported, and a switch made in the middle of a sale period hides mistakes that would otherwise be caught. Schedule the move for a quieter month, and keep the old platform read-only until the new one has run a full cycle.

The six flows to build first

Build the welcome series first, because it sets the expectations for every later message. Then build the abandoned-checkout sequence, usually three messages over a few days, which targets shoppers who reached checkout and left. Browse abandonment comes next, for shoppers who viewed products without adding them to the cart.

Post-purchase messages should be timed to delivery rather than to the purchase date, so the customer receives care instructions or a cross-sell when the parcel arrives. Winback sequences target lapsed buyers in tiers based on how long they have been inactive. Replenishment and cross-sell flows come last, because they depend on accurate product and order data.

Measure each flow on its own. A single campaign report hides whether the cart sequence or the welcome series is doing the work, and the answer changes which flow to improve first.

Shopify verdict

Model your profile count at the size you expect in a year, build the five core flows first, and decide on SMS before you choose.

Shopify email questions, answered

Answers use the prices and limits published by each vendor on 7 October 2026.

What is the best email app for a Shopify store?

For most stores with a real catalog, Klaviyo is the default pick: it has a Shopify connector built around orders, checkouts and products, and its email plan starts at $20 a month for 500 profiles. Stores that want no monthly fee at the start should begin with Shopify Email, which is free for the first 10,000 emails each month. Budget-first stores that also need SMS in the same account should compare Brevo.

How many contacts can I have before Klaviyo gets expensive?

Klaviyo prices its email plan by active profiles. On the pricing page the email plan is listed at $20 a month for 500 profiles, $100 for 5,000, $150 for 10,000 and $400 for 25,000. The free plan covers up to 250 active profiles and 500 email sends a month. Add SMS and the bill grows, because Email+SMS plans are priced separately. Model your profile count at the size you expect to reach in twelve months, not the size you have today.

Is Shopify Email enough for abandoned-cart and post-purchase emails?

Shopify Email handles campaigns and sends well at low volume, and its per-email pricing means a small store pays only for what it sends beyond the first 10,000 emails each month. Stores that want long branching automations, predictive segments or detailed flow reporting usually outgrow it. Check the current feature list on the pricing page before you rely on it for a specific flow.

Should a Shopify store choose Mailchimp or Klaviyo?

Mailchimp is the faster route to a first campaign and has a free plan to 250 contacts and 500 sends a month. Klaviyo gives deeper store-specific flows and segments, and the gap matters more as the catalog and order volume grow. Many stores start on Mailchimp, then move when cart and post-purchase automation becomes a revenue line. Plan the move before the list gets large, because the migration cost rises with the number of flows and segments.

Which email flows should I build first?

Start with a welcome series, an abandoned-checkout sequence, a browse-abandonment flow, a post-purchase message timed to delivery, and a winback sequence for lapsed buyers. These cover the moments when a shopper has shown intent, or has just bought. Add replenishment or cross-sell only after those five run cleanly, because they depend on accurate order and product data.

Does a Shopify store need SMS?

It can help for time-sensitive messages such as abandoned carts, shipping updates and limited drops, but it adds cost and consent obligations. Keep SMS in the same platform as email so that segments, consent records and quiet hours stay in one place. Brevo and Klaviyo both offer SMS, priced separately from their email plans. Use text for high-intent moments and keep promotions mostly in email to avoid overloading subscribers.

Which tool suits a store with a tiny budget and no list yet?

Shopify Email has no monthly fee below 10,000 emails a month, so it is the lowest-cost start for a store that has not yet built a list. Mailchimp and MailerLite also have free plans, though their free allowances are small: 250 contacts for Mailchimp and 250 subscribers for MailerLite. Move to a paid plan when you have a clear list-growth target and at least one automated flow that you want to run.
